The death has been announced of Luiz Henrique, a brazilian football player who came into Nigeria briefly last year for trials and medicals for possible transfer to Vandrezzer FC of Nigeria.


According to a local news media in Brazil, Luiz Henrique Farias who was a right back died on Tuesday at the age of 32 at his home town, Recife in Brazil.

He was signed during the summer transfer window by Vandrezzer FC, Lagos based second division club plying its trade in Nigeria National League, the second tier of club football in the country.


He arrived in December 2020 but his stay was cut short after he contracted Malaria which forced him to return to Brazil same month to seek medical treatment.

Information reveals that he departed Akwa Ibom for Lagos on the 23rd of December 2020 onboard the Ibom Air 16:15 hrs flight, in the company of the Acting Chief Operating Officer of the Club.


Upon his arrival at Lagos, he was accompanied to the departure wing of the Muritala Muhammed International Airport where the player then departed Nigeria onboard the British Airways (BA)74 flight to London en route to Brazil

Further information reveals that during his stay in Nigeria, he had no illness of any kind. Also, before his departure, he undertook the compulsory Covid-19 Test which also detected no signs of Covid-19.

He was admitted to a hospital in Bahia and treated with suspicion of Covid-19 before he was eventually diagnosed with malaria. He died on Tuesday morning.


His former club, Fluminense released a note communicating the death of his former athlete and regretted the loss. "We can only thank and fondly remember the player's commitment".

Speaking on behalf of the club in Nigeria, Vandrezzer FC, Acting Chief Operating Officer of the Club, Mr. Kingsley Ogbonna, expressed sadness at the news of Luiz’s death.


He explained “Even though the deal did not sail through with Vandrezzer FC, he maintained an open mind through out the time he was with us”. As he bade farewell to VFC, he took pictures with the Vandrezzer FC players as they all said their farewells to him ahead of his trip back to Brazil.

Indeed, our deepest sympathy goes to his wife, son and other family members he has left behind. It is our solemn prayer that the good Lord would grant him eternal rest and give his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss”.
