The Sun Newspapers' award of Sports Personality of the Year (2020) to Comrade Philip Shaibu, the Edo State Deputy Governor, was a great fit, according to Yussuf Alli, the General Manager of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

Shaibu was awarded the Sports Personality of 2020 by the Sun Newspaper on Saturday.

"It's a perfect match." Shaibu's efforts to sports at the local, state, national, and international levels have been enormous in the previous five years, and the award is a fitting tribute to a man who collaborated with sports-loving Governor Godwin Obaseki to reposition sports in Edo state and Nigeria."

"He is not only a sports administrator par excellence, he is also a participant, he is the first governor or deputy governor to register and play in the Nigeria Football League," Alli said. He is also the first significant political figure to win a gold medal in football at the National Sports Festival, after leading Team Edo to a 3-2 victory over Team Lagos in the men's football final."

Alli stated that Edo Insurance Football Team of Benin supporters will be thankful to him for his involvement in restoring the club, while Edo Queen's players and staff will remember that he ensured they receive similar salary and allowances as their male counterparts, Edo Insurance FC players.

Shaibu did a fantastic job as head of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival, according to Alli.

" Shaibu worked tirelessly, with the support of his Governor, to ensure that Edo put world-class sports facilities and equipment in place and that the organization ran smoothly despite the enormous challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic."

Shaibu's influence on the spectacular rise of sprint sensation Enoch Adegoke culminated in his making the final of the men's 100m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, according to the General Manager of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

"At a time in his career when few believed in Adegoke, Shaibu put his faith in him, and the result was his outstanding performance in Tokyo, where he became the first Nigerian to qualify for the Olympics 100m final in 25 years."

Alli also praised The Sun Newspapers' management for honoring those who deserve it.
