Aruna Quadri celebrates his victory with the fans

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation has released the names of players that will represent the country at the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast , Australia .



The names include seven times Olympian and former Africa Champion, Segun Toriola, who is presently ranked 261 in the world and third in Nigeria.



The Ilorin born player was ranked number 1 in Africa from 1998 to June 2008; he made history as the first athlete to win Gold in 2002 when table tennis debut at the Commonwealth games in the city of Manchester.

He was also part of the Mens Team event that lost to the English team 3-0, the other members of the team includes Monday Merotohun and Kazeem Nosiru.

Others on the list include, the sensational Aruna Quadri, Nigeria number one tennis player and Africa number two.  Quadri was part of the Mens Team that won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

2016 National Champion and last year Asoju Oba Winner, Jamiu Azeez is the only player on the list based in Nigeria , other foreign based players on the list includes Abiodun Bode , who defeated  Aruna Quadri in the round of 16 at the Nigeria Open last year and Omotayo Olajide, a GEWO brand ambassador , Omotayo is Nigeria second best player and presently ranked  207 according to the ITTF ranking .

In the Para Table Tennis Division (PTTD). Netherland based Tope Ogunsanya (male) and Faith Bazuaye (female) will be flying the colours of Nigeria.

But what has being controversies concerning the list as regards to the exclusion of the female players .

When asked about the exclusion of the female players from the forth coming Commonwealth games, the coach of the National Team , Coach Nasiru Bello said .



“ There is no prospect among the females for the games, the podium is our target, and the female has never given us any medal at the commonwealth games .All the male players have prospect and that is why their names are on the list.

He concluded by saying that the Commonwealth game is not a jamboree.
