D'Tigers at the 2017 FIBA Afrobasket in Tunisia
The President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Engineer Musa Kida says the latest FIBA ranking which has shot the D’Tigers to number 1 in Africa will continue to strengthen the board’s resolve to reposition the game.
FIBA in its new ranking system recently launched revealed that Nigeria has been adjudged the 26th best basketball playing nation after their silver medal winning feat at the 2017 FIBA AfroBasket held in Tunisia.

Kida while reacting to the news from FIBA which was sent by its Secretary General, Patrick Baumann, said “The new found status of Nigerian basketball at the global stage as indicated by the latest FIBA ranking never came by accident but as a result of well worked out plans by the new federation.

"Even when we won the AfroBasket title in 2015, Nigeria was never deemed the best in Africa but with a sustained progress and the way the team played in Tunisia, we have become the pride of African basketball.”
With the new ranking covering results of games in regional pre-qualifiers, qualifiers, continental championships, Olympic and the World cup, Kida is optimistic of s better ranking for Nigeria at the end of the 2019 world cup qualifiers.

"This has opened a new vista for more countries to fight for supremacy on the ladder with more competitions included as part of the yardstick by FIBA to rank teams. As we have continued to maintain the tempo after just 2 months in charge of basketball administration in Nigeria, we will be persistent in our approach and show the world that the game can be bigger in Nigeria.”

Though, dropping 10 points from the 2016 ranking after the Olympic Games in Rio, Nigeria with 211.3 points is Africa’s best team.
Angola is ranked second (33rd in the world), Senegal is third on the continent (36th) while reigning Africa champions Tunisia and Egypt are fourth and fifth in Africa in 45th and 48th respectively on the global ladder.
