Nigerian club Kano Pillars have promised to make the most of their opportunity to play continental football for a second successive season.

Sai Masu Gida will represent Nigeria in the 2020-21 CAF Confederation Cup, with the Nigeria Football Federation recently ratifying the decision to end the past season using a points-per-game method.

This has seen Plateau United and Rivers United assigned to the CAF Champions League, while Enyimba will feature in the Confederation Cup – as the top three finishers of the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Pillars, meanwhile, have somewhat snuck in the back door to the Confederation Cup, as they were given their berth as the latest (2019) champions of the Aiteo Cup, the 2020 edition of which was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Pillars played in the Champions League last season, but were eliminated at the first hurdle by Ghana’s Asante Kotoko. Club technical advisor Ibrahim Musa says Pillars don’t want to waste another chance to play in African club competition.

" We are all excited to be back in the continent. It is a golden opportunity for us to compensate our fans. Last time, we exited the Champions League quite early and I know how painful it was for all of us,” he told the Daily Trust.

" Things will be done differently this time for us to justify our rating as one of the best clubs in the country.”

He added that Pillars probably would have defended their Aiteo Cup had they been given the opportunity:

" Some might feel we were lucky to be handed the continental ticket but the truth is that we were going to retain the Cup. We had made up our minds on the very day we won the trophy to retain it.”
