The Nigerian Police Rugby team pipped off the Cowrie RFC at the last encounter of the Lagos Rugby League season on Saturday, 24th August 2019 at the Main Bowl National Stadium.

The last game for the evening was marred with so much intensity and determination to win by both players which resulted to the Nigerian Police Rugby Team getting a penalty try by David Omon after the first half encounter.

Entering into the second half, Captain of the Cowrie Team, Onoru Jatto had a try after long pace dusting the backs of the Police Team and Hassan Mohammed gave his side and extra two point after converting.

With so much stoppage of time by the referee Mohammed Salisu, trying to calm the tension of the game by the two teams, the Police Rugby backs Maleek supposedly had a try and was initially called for proper decisions taken by both the referee and the touch judge but was later awarded to the Nigerian police rugby team.

Speaking with assistant Coach of the Nigeria Police Rugby team, Attahiru Abubakar he said the officiating needs more encouragement and also need to go for more referee course.

“The officiating need more encouragement, with what I saw today for them to stop the game for as long as more than 30 mins arguing for a try.

We give glory to God for the victory, if they had not given us the try I don’t think I would have continue the match because I will stand on my ground standing as the assistant coach of Nigerian Police Rugby team, am very happy that we were victorious.

Furthermore, Abubakar stated that the police rugby team needs more encouragement “Well the organization is not encouraging, we are only playing rugby with our raw body, nothing is given to us, look at my boys we are all playing with our own sweat and no encouragement from anywhere, no companies sponsoring anything, well we give glory to God because for us to come out and play.

Still speaking he said “Some of them had injury even my first aid box we have nothing we had to source form friends just to play because of the passion and love of the game. We hope for sponsors to help Nigerian police and assist us for further upcoming games.

He also mentioned that the rescheduled games which they will be facing Kings College Old Boys RFC will be another test for the to be crowned champions of the Lagos Rugby League.

“KCOB are most improved team side for now and I am hopeful we will win the match” he said.

In the other games in the Lagos league Gozar RFC saw off Kc Old Boys after defeating them 17-15. With Felix diamond and Lateef john both scoring their tries in 5th min and 12th min respectively.

Lateef Jimoh in the second half had another try and also converted in the 12th min into the second half. While Prince Sam in the made a try in the 15th min of the first half and later converted by Monday Alex.

Later in the 20min of the first half, Prince Sam had another try and missed his conversion which could have increase their point and Monday Alex gave his side a penalty try.
